Welcome to Aviation Medical Services' new web site! Our goal with this page is to provide you with access to information about who we are, what we do, and most importantly, what we can do for you! If you're either a pilot or involved in the field of aviation and are looking for expert AMEs that can answer your questions, you've found the right place.
Aviation Medical Services of Alaska specializes in performing Aviation Medical Examinations, performing over 200 flight physicals per month. We we are experts in providing assistance to pilots with problematic Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) medical cases. While not every medically disqualified pilot can hope to have his or her Medical Certificate reinstated, many actually can, and the outcome is often determined by the quality of the supporting documentation rather than the actual medical condition in question.

Our office is located in Anchorage, Alaska, very close to Ted Steven's International Airport and Lake Hood, on the corner of International Airport Road and Spenard Road. If you're heading towards the airport on International Airport Road, take the right at Spenard and take another immediate right (into the parking lot). You should see us.

We have moved! We are in the same building as before, at the intersection of International Airport Road and Spenard Road, however, we are now on the SECOND FLOOR in Suite 205 and are no longer in the office facing International Airport Road. You may find us by taking the stair case to the left of our old entrance, or it is easier to drive around to the opposite end of the building (the side facing the Marriott) and enter through the double glass doors and then proceed upstairs and youll find us behind the first door on your right.

In an effort to continually improve our service to you, the staff and doctors at Aviation Medical Services of Alaska are encouraging pilots to use MedXpress.

All you need is an internet connection, an email address, set up a password, and you can fill out the FAA 8500-8 (flight physical application form) in the convenience of your own home! You will need to bring the confirmation number to your AME, and it would be helpful to provide a printed copy of your application as well. This is the first step in an ongoing effort by the FAA to eventually have a paperless system for all flight physical processes. We are not there yet, but we are dedicated to helping make it happen. Drs. Petra Illig and Arthur Tilgner are pleased to announce the addition of three FAA aviation medical examiners (AME's) to their aviation medicine practice. In order to continue to provide high quality FAA medical examinations and aeromedical consultations six days a week, Dr. Mark Zimmerman, David Hemry, and Mary Ellen Gordian have joined Aviation Medical Services of Alaska.

Mark Zimmerman has been in private practice in obstetrics and gynecology since 1970. He became interested in aviation after moving to Alaska in 1986. He obtained his private pilot license in 1994 and also has an instrument rating. He and his wife love aviation. Since becoming an AME this year, he has found the pilot community is keeping him excited about flying for many years to come.

David Hemry first came to Alaska forty years ago. he first served in the Army at Fort Richardson, later in the Alaska Army National Guard as State Surgeon, and has practiced in Anchorage as an Allergist since 1974. He has been an active pilot for 41 years and enjoys his 180 on floats. One of the most memorable flights was with the first Alaska Airman Association group flight to the USSR in 1991.

Mary Ellen Gordian specializes in public health, and came to Alaska in 1991 as a Medical Officer for Anchorage. She currently works part-time at UAA as an Associate Professor of Environmental Health. Although not a pilot, she has always had a strong interest in aviation and many friends who are pilots.

Drs. Illig and Arthur Tilgner have over 60 years of combined aviation medicine experience, perform about 75% of the FAA medical examinations in the state of Alaska, and are in the top five AME's in the nation. They have a deep understanding of what pilots need in order to stay healthy and keep their FAA medical certificates, and are experts in difficult certification cases and Special Issuances.

Our Hours, Rates, and Fees ...
No matter where you live, you can have the best in the business look into your flight physical problem, give you sound advice, and advocate for you every step of the way. If obtaining your FAA Medical Certificate is at all reasonable, we will give you the best assistance money can buy, for a very reasonable fee.
Aviation Medical Services is also fully accredited to monitor and process HIMS cases.
Currently we charge $135 for an FAA Examination, $75 for an FAA transmitted EKG, and we charge $250 / hr. for consultation fees. We also offer a 50% discount to student pilots.
We're open Monday through Friday from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm, local time and by appointment on Saturdays. Walk-ins are more than welcome, but you really do need to schedule an appointment (preferably well in advance). Aviation Medical Services respects the privacy of our customers, and you can be assured that any information you give us will be held strictly confidential within the confines of the law. Basically, we don't gather and sell your information, or give it to any third parties under any circumstances without your express consent.
